Veteran Bodybuilder Announces Comeback for Olympia Qualification Push

veteran bodybuilder s olympia comeback

The 2026 bodybuilding season has drawn several veteran competitors back into the spotlight, with Phil Heath, Roelly Winklaar, and Blessing Awodibu each signaling intentions to qualify for the 62nd Mr. Olympia, scheduled for September 24–27 in Las Vegas. The event carries a projected prize pool exceeding $2 million, with the Men’s Open champion set to receive $600,000, the largest payout in the competition’s history.

Phil Heath, a seven-time Mr. Olympia champion from 2011 to 2017, has been linked to a potential return through a video titled “THE KING RETURNS,” fueling speculation about his 2026 plans. Heath built his legacy on fuller muscle bellies, three-dimensional density, and genetics widely considered elite. His basketball background informed a training style marked by controlled aggression and precision.

Why Many Pro Bodybuilders Are Switching to ‘Recovery-Focused’ Training in 2026

Phil Heath’s legacy — built on elite genetics, three-dimensional density, and precision — may not be finished yet.

Throughout his reign, he navigated injuries, persistent criticism, and mounting pressure from challengers before stepping away from the stage.

Roelly Winklaar, known in bodybuilding circles as “THE BEAST,” has formally announced a comeback targeting the 2026 Mr. Olympia. Winklaar’s return emphasizes a more developed physique compared to his previous appearances, with his camp presenting the announcement as a statement of renewed competitive intent.

His goal is to compete at the elite level in Las Vegas alongside the division’s current contenders.

Blessing Awodibu is also targeting a return after an extended break from competition. He won both the Indie Pro and New York Pro early in his career to earn his last Olympia qualification four years ago. Awodibu has focused recent preparations on leg development and is projected to finish sixth at the 2026 Detroit Pro on March 14, an event that also features Nathan Epler and Patrick Moore. Known as “The Boogeyman” in the bodybuilding community, Awodibu’s return has generated significant anticipation among fans and analysts alike.

A strong performance there would advance his qualification efforts.

The 2026 Olympia field includes defending champion Derek Lunsford, who is refining mass, symmetry, and conditioning for his title defense, alongside contenders such as Hadi Choopan, Chinedu Obiekea, Tonio Burton, and Martin Fitzwater.

Whether Heath, Winklaar, or Awodibu can position themselves among that group remains to be determined as the season progresses.
